Slow VPN Speeds
Problem
Your internet connection is noticeably slower when SkyDomeVPN is active. Pages load slowly, video buffers, or downloads are throttled.
What affects VPN speed
- Distance to the VPN server — the further away, the higher the latency.
- Server load — popular servers may be congested.
- VPN protocol — older protocols add more overhead than NordLynx.
- Your base internet speed — VPNs cannot exceed your ISP's limit.
- Device hardware — older CPUs may struggle with encryption at high throughput.
How to improve speeds
- Switch to NordLynx (WireGuard-based) protocol in Settings > Protocol — it is the fastest option.
- Connect to a server closer to your physical location.
- Use the Quick Connect button, which automatically picks the least-loaded server.
- Close any bandwidth-heavy background apps (cloud backups, streaming, torrent clients).
- Run a speed test at speedtest.net with and without the VPN to measure the actual difference.
Modern connections on NordLynx typically lose less than 10% of base speed. If you are losing significantly more, try a different server location.
